... was not able to get the extra SSD in, power supply problems with what i have available.
Doing a in place on USB upgrade, and busy sourcing a M.2 SSD (non NVME) for OS only.
waiting for upgrade to finish, then need to see what i need to do on my new App pool and then install of the Plex, Unify and qBit torrent, a influxdb container and the speed test container. first up will be Plex.

Seems to be issues with the boot media... do you have another option to try?

Otherwise, you should still be able to boot back to the old boot environment.

i also thought so... but seems problem is that USB now.
how do i build a new install, download iso to usb, insert, from from it and then install to target drive..
will it see my old storage i have a config file, but it came now from my core setup,
can i do all of this with scale, or do i have to first rebuild with core
?

Probably... welcome to the 99%

Hopefully you have your config somewhere and it's just a case of finding a disk (or at worst case another USB stick) you can use.

Yes, that's how to do it.

Scale might be able to just read a CORE config and sort-of do the upgrade process on it... you will, of course, still not get jails back, but pools and shares should import from the details in the config.

hehehe, how quickly i went from the lucky 1% to the 99%, get idea bl00dy murphy is lurking here some where.
I'm pulling the apps SSD's. for now will install onto a single 500GB SSD until I can source a new M.2 SSD.

've made peace that the jails are gone. they were gone when the M.2 went. so for now it is getting it back with my config, reading the pools, will then deploy the dockers that mimics the jail apps.

A boot USB can be very close to its limit with "good blocks" left to write to and can survive quite a while on a stable system as not many writes happen on the boot pool, but when they do... and you just made that the case with the upgrade... it's game over.

Also, since it's a USB stick with no SMART, you get absolutely no warning about that and how close you are to the edge of the cliff.

valid, all true...
working on getting it back as much as i can now... and then as soon as I can switch over to a M.2 SSD, they not that available everywhere anymore either, NVME have taken over most everywhere.

here is crossing fingers, hoping the install of a new SCALE and introduction of a config file will happily work together, match made in heaven time.

stretalla, for reference, i'm not in a big city, little coastal town. 2 IT shops and well both leave allot to be desired, the guys did not know difference between M.2 SSD and M.2 NVME, they just knew they have 1 hole or 2 holes where the silver connectors are, and they need to always match 2 with a new 2.

Technically, NVME is also an M.2 SSD... what you're talking about is M.2 SATA vs M.2 NVME (both are SSDs).

.. please help me check something quickly. my MB is: Gigabyte+GA-B250M-D3H,
looking at the below picture... that looks like it is NVME compatible... vs the M.2 SATA I pulled out.

think this is the relevant line...

  1. 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA and PCIe x4/x2 SSD support)
even though the plastic holder and the pins imply NVME the writing does not. or am i missing something.

got a SCALE installed, then went load configuration, it did a reboot, it's up if i look at the console, correct IP address, but does not want to present admin/login page via the browser .
ideas.
Can we confirm if SCALE can consume a conf file from CORE, otherwise I need to rebuild to core, load the config file and then do a upgrade,
I can always once upgraded, export the SCALE build config file, then do a fresh SCALE install and load the config file at that point.
clean and fresh
