hello,
i was wondering if with the new versions of ZFS following rule applies: ~1TB of storage = 1GB of ram

Asking because i was wondering what RAM do i need for my NAS which will contain ~ 50TB pool.

thanks

That has always been a deliberately-loose rule of thumb. Over about 32 GB, RAM requirements depend largely on workload. What do you intend to be doing with the system?

Just for storing those things? Most likely 16 GB will be fine. Acting as a media server (Plex/Emby/Jellyfin)? I'd bump it up to 32 GB. I'd recommend using the largest RAM modules you can, to maximize room for expansion if/when needed.

@danb35; well the machine is limited by CPU xeon max limit is 64GB ram. Basically i am running ESXi, Truenas in VM for a NAS only purposes.

Then I want to install some ubuntu VM (with remaining ram ie 64-16GB) and there setup plex and other apps.

not sure it that makes a sense?
thanks
