Hello everybody,
I have this network :
network.png

I've an old FreeNAS 0.69 for the server and an IPCop 1.4.21 for the firewall.

I've upgrade my FreeNAS server with the 8.0.1 beta4. (it work and it's more user friendly)

But i would lite to do the same with IPCop (a little old and not user friendly)

Which firewall did you use ?

Did you have an idea ?

Thank you.

I use DD-WRT on Linksys. I've been wanting to give Pfsense a try for some support I do, looks like it's pretty useful.

Thank you for your reply.
I've heard about pfSense and IPFire (a fork of IPCop).
I think i will try pfSense 1.2.3 (Based on FreeBSD 7.2)

I have pfsense installed at dozens of clients and it works flawlessly. It is by far the best firewall product I have ever run across and I've used it to replace high priced dedicated router/firewalls in several cases. I would skip 1.2.3 and go right to version 2.0, It is in the final release candidate and unlike a product we all know, this means that it is feature complete and virtually bug free. it can be complex, but like FreeNAS there is a very good forum that will help you through any difficulties.

There is another problem.
In one week i will leave for Tokyo.
I need to have an access at my FreeNAS and Firewall.
Maybe with a VPN ?
I've a Dell Mini 9 with Mac os and another partition free.
Windows or Linux for a VNP ?
For the pfSense RC3 i don't know how to update it ...
Like freenas ?
I think i will use another hard drive and choose how to boot by the bios or use an usb drive ...

Open VPN

Just set up Open-VPN on the firewall. There are numerous clients for every OS that will let you connect to your network.

I've been using pfSense since around 2005. It's progressed quite a bit since then. Always been solid, even release candidates and betas. Relatively straight forward to configure, even if you want things like VLANs, or QoS. I have 4 networks in my house (all running through pfSense). Regular LAN, Guest Net, VoIP Net, DMZ (all but the DMZ are VLANs). My AP supports VLAN, so it serves up access to both the LAN and the Guest Net. DMZ is allocation from the provider and where the external interface for pfSense and my work VPN reside.

Hello guys,
Now i live in tokyo and i haven"t had the time to update my firewall from ipcop to pfsence ...
The 2.0 Release is available.
Maybe on december i will came back in france and update the firewall ^^
I will try to create a VNP connection with Ipcop just to have an access to my files and to update freenas from BETA4 to RC2 ...
I will use teamviewer to control one computer at home and do the freenas update and create the ipcop VNP
I saw lot's of "how to" and they always use OpenVPN what did you think about it ?

Thank guys and cheer from Tokyo ^_^

pfSense 2.0

Best open-source firewall available, just make sure you nic's are supported in FreeBSD 8.0 release.

Moin,
i prefer pf in combination with a squid/havp proxy running ontop of FreeNAS.
Primary reason is to save energy and to have everthing centralized on one box.
