VM screen resolution in SCALE

Hello,

I just installed TrueNAS SCALE and found a bug within the Display Device. The problem is that the VNC resolution is always set to 800x600 no matter what resolution is defined in the Display Device. It did not find a way to increase the screen resolution.

Would be great if this could be fixed.

Thanks,

Frank.

This needs to be posted in Jira. A "bug-report" here won't be actioned (see "Report a Bug" at the top of the page

I don't think it's a bug. The display resolution basically sets "native" resolution of the display device. If OS is setting 800x600 it will display as 800x600. Linux is usually good at using correct resolution for a display device but Windows uses much lower resolution until you install KVM Windows Guest Drivers.

That solved the problem. Thank you!

I installed the VirtoIO-Drivers and now I am able to use many different resolutions in Windows.

So this also means that currently the screen resolution in the KVM Config of Scale is useless for Windows guests.

Not useless but more of a suggestion. The only difference is that Linux has the driver in the kernel and can use it from first boot while Windows is Windows and needs separate driver. In Linux you can also change resolution no matter what is set for VNC resolution - like I wrote it only informs "native" resolution - most useful in Linux terminal which scales nicely to native res by default.

Microsoft has it's own hypervisor and only it's support is in their best interest so AFAIK they don't include drivers for other hypervisors.

Thank you for this, I've been struggling for hours trying to find a solution for this. I know it sound dumb, but I've been trying to experiment playing games on VM. Everything was locked to 800x600 without this fix.

For anyone else who finds this thread:

I used the stable version.

Just leaving a follow up also for people who might find this. I've been struggling for days and finally figured out the current version (0.1.217) would not install on my windows 10 VM no matter what I did. Finally tried a slightly older version (0.1.215) and it installed right away and I can now change resolution! So if you have problems just try other versions.
