So i have been using synology for some years but the price of repleacement is quite high and I dont need all the fancy software.

Dont really need their raid systems since I take backups anyway!

SO FreeNas looks like a good solution.

What about storage. If I use an old but actually quite powerfull i5 laptop with 8GB ram I get get it running.

So the question is "can i use some USB storage as the disk space" whiilst i install the OS on the laptop disk ?

Short answer is while it is possible, it is highly not recommended if you care about your data.

FreeNAS is best meant for server grade software. Again it is not required, but I can tell your from experience of other people posting on here who have done what you want to do that the experience is likely to be poor and there is a much higher chance of a data destroying fault.

Good luck.

Installing FreeNAS on a laptop might be a problem because many laptops require proprietary drivers for NIC's and other devices. Remember, a computer is more than just the CPU and memory. Also, external storage via USB is not reliable. I use USB attached storage as a secondary backup target, but don't rely on it for main storage.
