Hi there!

I am quite new to FreeNAS but I think I followed the guide to the best of my ability. I am usingFreeNAS-9.10.2.

I have created a SMB share you see below:

And here is the SMB service:

I have also created the interface as follows (it is the .127 IP)

Also, this is my global config:

If there is anything glaring that is wrong please let me know! Also, if I am not following the forum rules please let me know as well!

Thanks in advance :)

What happens when you try to go to the share? Is it a matter of Windows 7 not automatically "seeing" the share for you to map? Have you tried to view/map the share manually (\\192.168.1.127\sharename) ?

Uncheck the home share box, you don't want that.

Thanks for your help SweetAndLow as well as John Digital!

I removed the homeshare selection but it doesn't seem to have made too much of a difference. Why should I have removed it? Just curious!

Also, trying to connect IP like you said John Digital comes back with this response:

Which makes me believe that it is trying to connect for a second but then can't? If it wasn't available at all it wouldn't send this message I don't think.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again!

This could be remedied by restarting the SMB services and or restarting the machines, although I'm sure that's the first thing any windows user ever does first. Other basic generic things to try run the gamut, but generally speaking disable Windows Defenders, firewalls, antivirus, malware stupidity software, Windows UAC settings, Homegroups and all that associated ridiculousness, make sure you are up to date as far as windows updates go, and of course you are able to ping the server, right? SSH to it? Does \\192.168.1.127 by itself produce anything? I only say that because the netbios name and share name as you have it would be freenas (\\freenas\freenas) and windows is bitching about names, IDK. The IPs are in the same range and subnet, right? Same workgroups (WORKGROUP) as you have it? My Windows patience is extremely limited these days and I have all but abandoned it forever. These are all very basic generic things to try--if you havent already, that I have typed as fast as possible while chugging a beer.

I'm sorry that you are so frustrated with Windows :( This is my first foray into anything Linux based and am liking it so far so perhaps I'll be a convert - eventually!

As for the questions you asked, I did have all the regular things disabled (Firewalls, no malware, virus scanners, etc.) and also double checked that both the PC and NAS are on the WORKGROUP workgroup.

I can SSH to the box:

But when I tried to disable and enable the SMB service I did get an error and am unable to get it started again. This is what I have in my log:

The netatalk thing has been happening since I first booted the box though so I'm unsure if that is the problem. The last 4 things is what I get when I try to start the SMB service again.

Any ideas would be really appreciated!

Thanks :)

Well I ended up just wiping my FreeNAS USB and redoing everything and it worked. I guess I cant complain but that was very weird!

Thanks again for everyone's help!
