Hi,

My primary hostA has been rsyncing to hostB for some time.

I wish to switch to ZFS replication.

Is there a way to do this so that zrep picks up were the rsync left off?

I've roughly 100TB and would hate to start over seeing that hostA and hostB already have the same data.

In the past I had to start over and thought to post this (hopeless) question anyways.

Thanks in advance.

PS I was kinda thinking that if I rsync over a snapshot from hostA to hostB that perhaps this would work?

No, I'm fairly certain this is impossible.

Thanks for the reply Eric, much appreciated. I figured that but wanted to ask anyways. Hopefully my upgrade from 9.3 to 9.10 will include some replication speeds goodness.

Pretty sure you can't just switch. Replication uses snapshots to look for differences to replicate. So since there isn't a snapshot already replicated to compare against it won't be able to incrementally transfer data.

I think I would try to round up 2 10gig NICs and direct attach the server's and replicate the data that way. Should be pretty quick at that point.

Nope. You can't. Replication is one way and the base snapshot which is empty, still needs to be transferred. And then everything.

I personally move my offsite onsite for the initial replication. Of course this might not be practical for you.

Edit: you can replicate at pool speeds if both pools are in the same box. Ie multi-GB/s.
