I purchased a Laview ip camera LV-CDP6014 which has NAS storage, ftp, DDNS and bunch of other protocols.

Here is the link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0XR-0084-00027

I setup Freenas thinking it might work, but it failed detecting the hard drive from the ip camera management. This is after I stopped configuring and gave up. Is that the correct way to point the file path for the hard drive?

So I called up Laview support department and they said the camera uses ONVIF protocol. Does Freenas support ONVIF protocol?

My only solution I guess would be to buy a nas/nvr device if I can't get it to work.

Thank you.

No it does not. I don't view ONVIF as a protocol, or I've never heard it called a protocol. Did you do a google search of it? Or read the Wiki page discussing it?

If your camera can upload data to a NAS then I would expect it to work with FreeNAS.

Thanks for your reply. I got this from their website...

"The ONVIF specification defines a common protocol how network video devices should exchange information such as live video, audio, metadata and control information. ONVIF conformant network video transmitters and receivers from different manufacturers will be able to communicate with each other by requesting and sending live view video streams. The specification will also ensure that conformant devices are automatically discovered and connected to network applications such as video management systems."

I will test freenas again and check my settings. Thanks.

OK, I downloaded the CD and skimmed through the manuals. I don't think you'll be able to use FreeNAS as a backend for the "NAS" settings. It looks their definition of NAS involves singular disks that Laview's software wants to format and control.

That said, you could enable FTP on your FreeNAS server and configure the FTP settings on each camera to upload it's images to your FreeNAS server.

Or for video, you can also configure a "storage server (pc nvr)" on either the computer where you have the client software loaded, or on separate computer.
