Hi all,
Glad to be on this forum.

I’ve spent the past couple of weeks speccing out a server for home use. The intended functions for this system are:
Run ESXi as the host
Run FreeNAS as a guest (passing direct access to the disks)
Running a few containers such as Embry/Plex, Zoneminder, etc
Running a couple of VMs for my families use (ie Web Surfing VM, Remote Work Access VM, Kids VM)
My objectives in order of importance:
  1. Data Integrity
  2. Data Redundancy
  3. Noise
  4. Cost
  5. Virtual Machines/Containers for the Family (3 VMs for now)
  6. Zoneminder for the Cameras (as described above)
I am questioning my choice of chassis and motherboard. Is it worth having the LSI 2308 built-in card on the X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD Motherboard and dealing with a higher cost chassis to accommodate the E-ATX board vs the no LSI 2308 built in on the X9DRL-iF. I've read that RAID controlers must be disabled for ZFS, but I also saw reference to Broadcom (previously LSI) controllers being used as the go-to for disks. Should I get a mobo with the LSI 2308 for on board SAS, or can I skip it? Do I need that at all?

I would greatly appreciate your time in reviewing the below and welcome any feedback.
Thank you.
