Need some guideline and steps on disk removal from FreeNAS 9.10. Two scenariosc below.

Scenario 1 :
- Two single drives are reported error from smartctl. Those are configured as single drive, not part of ZFS pool.
- Need detail steps on how to remove them from FreeNAS and leave no trace on the system.

Scenario 2 :
- One single drive also needed to be removed from FreeNAS 1 and the drive will be plug into FreeNAS 2 and allow FreeNAS 2 to read/write the data
- Need detail steps.

Many Thanks,

If you're using them with 9.3 or later, they're formatted with ZFS. No alternatives there.

Depends on what you're doing with it...

Nothing special. Just import the pool.

Go to the Storage screen, select the pool (yes, it is a ZFS pool), click the Detach button at the bottom (the one with the red X). In the window that pops up, if you want the disk wiped, check the box that says "mark disks as new", otherwise don't. Click OK. Do the same thing with the other pool.

Need to buy some cheap but reliable HDD (3T or 4T) for my FreeNAS as Black Friday sales is approaching. Any suggestion on what brand/model is best in term of price/performance and what drives to avoid.

Thanks in advanced.

Does not matter you just have to burn them in before you use them. We reds, seagates iron wolf, hgst Nas drives are the 3 most popular drives.

Yeah all over the forum and in my signature. The tool is called badblocks. You should probably read all the links in my signature.
