Hi,

I got 3 new 8tb Seagate ST8000VN0022 drives.
Build: Gigagyte Ga-H77-DS3H moba with intel i3-3220
I run the fresh FreeNAS-11.2-U2.1 with nothing else installed/setup

Out of freenas they run normaly, but when in freenas they start to click every 5 sek.
On synology forum found this issue as a system bug, that was fixed.
Load cycle count and other atribiutes seems to be in order, no abnormal numbers.
Tried to change power settings, but does not help in any way.
Is there any fix to that?

A context, please. Describe your hardware and FreeNAS setup.

I run the latest version of freenas
Please use an actual number when posting something like this because six months or a couple of years from now, it can be confusing for other people looking at it.

Its a test build so far, its on a Gigagyte Ga-H77-DS3H moba with intel i3-3220.
I installed a fresh FreeNAS-11.2-U2.1 , didn't start to set anythig else up, becouse I immediately noticed the weird clicking every 5 sek.
I know that seagate tends to be a bit hoter, but the disks reach alsmost 50C without any load.
Before for a couple of months I used some old WD drives (Green and Black) on the same hardwere and there wasn't any problem.
With new drives, when in bios theres also no clicking .

Are all the disks clicking? My Seagates idle at 45°C so I'm not overly surprised. As a first step, you might like to try booting up FreeNAS 11.1-U7 to see if the issue disappears.

Seems that there is no issue when in FreeNAS 11.1-U7
So its a FreeNAS-11.2-U2.1 bug?

Possible that there is something that needs to be adjusted. There is a change in the underlying version of FreeBSD and the boot loader.
Would you mind submitting a bug report and post your ticket number here?

FWIW - That's a 7200 RPM drive, they will run hotter. I have several HGST's, they sit in front of a pair of 120mm fans, and I still see 40/F idle temps.

Case solved

Turnes out system dataset is beeing written to added pool every 5sek.
To get rid of that its best to move system dataset to an ssd or switch "Reporting database" off, charts won't load as good but the silence is priceless

So I gather this was not 11.1 behaviour, but something introduced in 11.2?

I know that seagate tends to be a bit hotter, but the disks reach almost 50C without any load.

I have many 8TB Seagate IronWolf (ST8000VN0022-2EL112) drives they idle at 37C (ambient plus 20C) and they can hit 46C under load

What case are you using? Have you considered active cooling?

Have Fun

It's more of a test bench right now, so its in some retro case I own since 8 years, but it is actually quite good.
Nevertheless I installed 120mm fan for the drives and now the temprature is on 30ish (ambient 22), so its completly fine, still quite hotter than normal.
On previous drives I had more or less below 30C, without any fan.

So I gather this was not 11.1 behaviour, but something introduced in 11.2?
I'm not sure, but probably yes. From what I saw, before charts weren't that developed, so data for the new dashboard might use new data structure/set.
