I am thinking about getting 4x 2TB drives for FreeNAS RAID. Any thoughts on these Seagate ST2000DM001 drives? They are pretty cheap at under $100 each. My theory is that if they last 3 or so years without issue, it will be time to replace them then (for safety).

I have three of those drives, one of which has been OK for 18 months; the others are newer. The oldest one was a warranty replacement for a failed ST32000641AS, so it has the remainder of the original drive's 5-year warranty; the others have just a 2-year warranty. The ST2000DM001 drives run a little cooler than the remaining ST32000641AS ones.

Yeah. Honestly I am not a huge fan of Seagate but the price is right. I've read these are pretty fast drives, despite the fact that the system controlling these won't be 6Gbps SATA. Not even sure if it is 3 Gbps SATA. I would just do 1 TB models but it is only $20 per drive difference or so to double that. Choices... choices.
