As with anything else, I would not expect all manufacturers to produce equivalent quality cables - and price isn't always an indication of quality and reliability.

It makes sense to me to use high quality cables selected with as much care and forethought as the rest of the build. A build is, after all, only as good as it's weakest point of failure.

So... the question is - who makes SATA cables than have a reputation for reliability? Or am I being overly anal retentive?

I'm sure their are certain brands that are better than others. I'm using the ones that came with my SuperMicro motherboard and they are working fine.

I've also known people to waste money on "Monster" brand cables, when actually there is nothing special about them, besides marketing hype.

Yeah, I don't *even* want to go there. :D

I would go for the ones with the metal locking mechanism so that they don't become detached accidentally. Last thing you want is an accidental detachment due to vibration of something.
I have about twelve or more non-locking ones which came with my build that I would never use in a NAS box.

As for me, SATA cables from ASUS MB packages is the best. I tried cables from many manufacturers (include N/A cables), so I think they are similar: no metal locks, for a few time SATA-molex(on the cable or MB) broke, sometimes cables are braking for itselves, sometimes it have'nt good contact).
But ASUS cables I use for a years(plug/unplug/send I/O data): red SATA-I cables with r-figurative locks(since 2003-2004) orange SATA-II cables with r-figurative & i-figurative metal locks(since 2007), black SATA-III cables with r-figurative & i-figurative metal locks(since 2010-2011). At present, I've changed 2 or 3 red cables(was battered). And, so I really didn't have any problems with it. But now there's many various new cables, that I haven't use & don't know about it's quality. Try various in Desktop PC(for example), it costs not much.

I purchased four of these and two shorter version for my server. They lock in very well and I have had no issues with mine since installing them back in February 2013.

Honestly, I've had better way luck with SATA cables that come with motherboards than third party ones. I've had about a 40% failure rate for third part cables, and nearly 0% for ones that come with a mobo.
