Hey guys, new to the FreeNas world....I decided to turn my dell laptop into a FreeNas beast. I cleared the native drive on the Dell and have FreeNas on a USB. Everything is working fine but I wanted to know how can I prevent the laptop from going to sleep when the lid is closed? I know with ubuntu I could set that in the settings but in this case no OS is available as I wiped the native drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Another solution is to use a dock station for your dell laptop. You probably can find one on ebay for $10 to $15. I've been using dell d600 with dock station as my NAS. I use USB external drive for storage. It has been working great.

You don't say how old your laptop is. Newer laptops are likely to be more cooperative, since more recent BIOS ACPI implementations generally have fewer warts.

I have a feeling if you do some jiggery-pokery with the sysctl value hw.acpi.lid_switch_state, you may find some joy. I suspect it's currently set at "s3", which is the ACPI name for suspend/standby state (i.e., when the lid switch is activated, go to ACPI state S3). You don't want it to do anything, so try setting it to "NONE". (This is all wild guessing on my part; I don't have FreeBSD or FreeNAS running on a laptop.)

This page should give you the gory details: http://www.gsp.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?topic=acpi
