Can anyone recommend a compatible PCI-e SATA expansion card to add more drives to a build? eBay / Amazon links welcome

The only one that I can ever recall getting a positive recommendation here is the IOCREST SI-PEX40062 4 port SATA PCI-E .

Moderator @joeschmuck has commented on it several times - try searching his posts for any qualification and/or caveats.

Sounds like you want an HBA.

The hardware recommendations guide available here: https://www.ixsystems.com/community/resources/hardware-recommendations-guide.12/ (link to download the guide at the top of the page) covers HBAs on page 12.

I see folks in the US talking about finding them on EBAY for $30 all the time. Hopefully you can find one for not too much more than that in your neighbourhood.

If you need to install a card for connecting drives in FreeNAS, why wouldn't you want an HBA?

@apawnilation Never, I'd recommend an IBM M1015 in IT mode, eBay has those pre-flashed for about 40-45 bucks. Then two mini-SAS to 4xSATA breakout cables (or just one for now), and Bob is your proverbial parent unit's sibling.
