Hello,

I'm considering installing owncloud on my server to easily back up phones and tablets mainly.
Is it worth it and is it easy to install? Or is it just a waste of time? Would love some pros and cons of it.

Thanks in advance

The owncloud android app can backup pictures and videos taken, which several of my family members have setup. But, as for backing up the rest of your phone/tablet files; I think you'd manually have to upload what you want backed up. Also, if you're talking about iOS devices, I don't know if their app works differently.

From my use with it a few months back, it works the same way. Just pics and vids can be backed up from the device.

BTSync can do all the files on "/sdcard" on Android, maybe syncthing can too, I haven't set that one up yet.

Cyberjock had a great idea for this, which, to my surprise, has proven itself to be quite hands-off and elegant.

Get the app "Foldersync Lite" for your phones/tablets. Set it up on a schedule, wi-fi only, to certain SSIDs only (all standard functions in foldersync lite), and use the WebDAV service, of all things, for the service to FreeNAS. (That's how this came up---Cyberjock and I were talking, "Who the hell would need the stupid WebDAV service? Why do we even have that?" and we went out of our way to try something WebDAV, and accidentally he discovered this).

It really works amazingly well, to my surprise. Better than syncthing, various torrenting stuff, owncloud, etc.

Brilliant! Unfortunately an android only app and work provides me with an iphone. :(
