Noob in trouble...disks not showing?

Way back in 2014 or 2015, I built my own box running FreeNAS 9.2.1.2, with 5x2TB drives. It was up and running without problems. We moved to Singapore in 2017. I brought the NAS box with me. I never set it up and just left it in a box in the storage room gathering dust..until last week.

The wife asked for some old photos, which I know are stored on the NAS. While I am able to power up the system and get to the web UI. The system is not detecting any disks (Storage --> View Disks just shows blank). The disks are spinning for sure.

I know this is rather vague, but I don't even know where to start. I saw some previous threads where the experts asked to see the output of "zpool status". When I typed that in the shell, the response says "no pools available"

I don't want to do anything stupid to accidentally erase the disk or lose any data. Any suggestions? TIA

From the build date of 2014 or 2015, it might be using UFS with software RAID. So even if zpool import comes back with nothing, their is still hope.

Of course most of us either never used FreeBSD with UFS & it's software RAID. Or it has been long enough that we have forgotten diagnostic commands.

I fixed the code tags for you.

It seems you simply don't have anything that resembles a disk other than the boot pool attached to the computer.

Check the connections for data and power to the disks.

We have also confirmed that your boot pool is UFS.

After you check the power and data cables go to BIOS and check if the disks are detected and try to auto detect them again.

How are you attaching those disks to the motherboard?

Take your time and do not panic. Do one thing at a time. This actually looks like an easy fix. If all the physical connections to the hard drives are there, I would suspect the BIOS battery likely lost it's power and your BIOS is reset to default.

While no one has said it, do not try to upgrade to a newer version of FreeNAS/TrueNAS. There are compatibility issues as I recall during certain upgrades. FreeNAS 9.2.1.2 is stable to do what you need.

The drives are connected directly to the motherboard via the SATA ports on the motherboard.
At this point, seems like all things are pointing to hardware issues. There is quite a bit of good info here. Enough for me to poke around....hopefully it is something simple. Will report back.

the saga continues....

I replaced the BIOS battery and checked the cables. I am embarrassed to say that, indeed, some of the SATA cables were loose. Looks like the disks are now showing up in the responses to camcontrol devlist and gpart show see below. But, dmesg shows a bunch of errors (will post on a separate post as it is too long).

While the volume (HomeNas1) shows up in the web GUI, I am not able to mount it from my Mac.

Unless you fixed it already, you likely have a bad SATA cable connection here for ada1 ST2000VN000-1H3164 SC42 Serial Number W1H1NZLR.

Power the machine off, reseat or replace the one SATA cable, power on, then you can either watch the console for CRC error messages or examine dmesg for the errors. They hopefully they will be gone.

I think you will need to start a scrub once you have the CRC error fixed, let the scrub finish and zpool status will help let you know where it is, once done post the output of the status message. Hopefully it will be a good result.

How to start the scrub manually:
zpool status will give you the name of your pool name and the current status.
zpool scrub poolname will start the scrub.
After about 20 minutes run the first command again to see an estimated time for the scrub to complete. Leave it alone for at least that amount of time. Run the first command again, if completed then post that output. If not completed, wait per the estimated completion time and repeat as required.

It doesn't necessarily mean it's dead, it appears to have thrown out so much errors (thanks to the faulted cable) that the system decided to kick it out; zpool clear will put it back in but doing so before you replace the cable means it's likely to happen again.
We need a long smart test on ada1p2 to gain certainty.

There is little point (besides the data integrity guarantee) in starting it without replacing the defective cable.
Also, take note that your pool is out of parity drives right now and a scrub's toll on the disks is (apparently) similar to a resilver's.
