No space left on device

I'm trying to organize all my files into the right directory and when I start moving the files around, I got hit with "

Error: No space left on device"​

I deleted a lot of the files in the directories as well as the snapshot and for some reason, the space never got recovered. Is there any other thing I need to do after deleting the files to recover the space? I really haven't added any files into the server other than just moving it around and it puzzled me that I ran out of space.

When I do "df -ah" I notice a lot of files under k8s that are taking up gigs of space. Can I clean that one to recover the space? Any advise on what I need to do to clean up the space so I can recover all of those spaces?

My guess is that you have been trying to move files from one dataset to another such as maybe from Data/Corp to Data/Corporate...
Having to perform a move from a dataset to another dataset doesn't actually execute as a move operation in ZFS when done across dataset. Instead, zfs copies the data from the source dataset to the destination dataset and leaves the source dataset untouched.
If structure was the only thing you were after, you could have renamed the dataset instead using the relevant zfs command.

At this point, if you are satisfied with the copy process, you could destroy some or all of the snapshots or even destroy the no-longer needed dataset. But you need to me aware of the implication.

@Apollo is correct. I have been trying to move the data from /Corporate to /corp and I hear what you are saying. I did delete the source file after I moved the directory but as you can see, the size is still very crazy. For some reason even after I removed most of the files. it never changed the size of the available space. This tells me that it's storing some of the data somewhere or at least storing the old information on those files and it never gets deleted until a certain time. Speculating of course but I'm so puzzled with all this. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

Looks like these snapshots are the ones taking some worthwhile storage for a total of ~3.5 TiB.

Even though you have deleted all your files, they are held by the snapshot from the 8th and the 9th.
Now that you have deleted all your files, create a a new recursive snapshot and destroy the snapshot from the 8th and the 9th. Your available space will gradually recover as the blocks are going to be freed by ZFS.

Snapshot doesn't create file backups. They don't contain any files, just the location of the blocks (the blocks contains the fragments of the files).
You need to read up on ZFS and if you could experiment with snapshot creation, file addition and deletion as well as replication you might be able to get a better grasp of what's is happening in the background.
Snapshots are the best friends you can have when it comes to data management, resilience and reliability.
Don't avoid snapshot because you don't understand how they work.

Also read up on "zfs diff ..." as it will allow you to see what is happening with the files.

The tool that force free ZFS blocks is "zfs destroy -r name_of_napshot", assuming you did actually delete the files stored within those blocks.
Also, when you have multiple snapshots of a dataset, if a snapshot with a large expiration date was created when those large files where already present in the dataset, trying to delete newer snapshots that would have been created after (when the files were present, or after the files were deleted, you can try deleting and creating as many snapshot after the one with the large expiration date, you still will not be able to free up the space. For that you need to destroy any snapshots that points to the files in question.

If you really want to to recover the space and according to your steps, you have copied the files from /Corporate to /corp, then if you are satisfied with having the complete data under /corp, then you can do:

zfs destroy -r Data/Corporate/Media@auto-2024-01-08_00-00;

zfs destroy -r Data/Corporate/Media@auto-2024-01-09_00-00

Those 2 operations will delete the snapshot for the Data/Corporate/Media dataset and free up the 9.6TiB of space.
Give it possibly a few minutes for zfs to perform the block freeing operation.

@Apollo . Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge. This works very well now. Coming from the prosumer market, I expected Truenas to be a lot easier and user-friendly. It's definitely easier than the average enterprise software but still a bit more challenging for regular home lab users. Either way, all is good now. Thank you again for all the advice, everyone.
