Hello,

I'm currently thinking of building a new NAS based on TrueNAS to replace all my Synology and have better flexibility and possibility to upgrade.

I made a lot of research but I struggling to find a good compromise for motherboard/CPU/RAM that supports ECC (25 To of data so I think it's better to avoid some loss 'cause of corruption even with backups)
My main usage is only to store and access data by a Plex Server hosted on an ESXi so I don't need that much power and I would like to limit my expense.

The only things I know :
Case will be Fractal Design Node 804 because I already have one and it's perfect for my need but because of this I'm nnot available to have all size of motherboard.
Number of SATA port is not an issue because I'll use a LSI 9211-8i to connect them.

Have you got any advice ?

Thanks for your help

Need a bit more here. What are you looking for and what are you interested in spending. You said you have an ESXI box and this project is just a dumping ground for Plex. How do you intend to connect them? SMB to the guest? iSCSI to VMWare or the windows guest?

Finally: How many users for your Plex instance or how many concurrent 1080p streams are you targeting?

Hello,

Thanks for your anwser

I will connect them with SMB to the guest.
I have multiplous user but never had more than 3 simultaneously for 1080p or 4K content.

I would like to put less than 400€/$ for motherboard/ram/cpu but I can go above if necessary
In the research I continue to made, I understood I should be fine the the medium recommend solution and with some refurb a good solution can be the Supermicro X11SSL-F with an i3 and some ECC RAM (at least 16 Go). Good idea ?
