NAS without an Ethernet cable?

I am a complete noobie and have put 2 new 3tb WD reds in my old PC with 8gb of memory. Installation and setup couldn't have been easier. But I don't want to keep my NAS in the same room as my router. Am I able to move it to the next room and use a wireless dongle in the PC to stay connected to the network? If so, how do I configure it?
Any help greatly appreciated (1st time poster).

As far as I know FreeNAS does not include Wireless drivers.
See for example this thread.

You know, what you could do, is if you have an extra router, you could run it as a "wireless ethernet bridge" (assuming you flash it with OpenWRT or something), and your FreeNAS would be none the wiser...it would think it was connected via ethernet to the network, when in reality it's connected to just the router, and the ROUTER is wirelessly connected to the basepoint.

But that's semi-advanced voodoo. It's a clever idea though.

The wireless bridge does work however as DrKK said, it is a bit advanced, you need another router that you can place into Bridge mode, and it will be only as fast as the wireless bridge so in reality that is still slow and I'm not sure you would be happy with the performance.

One suggestion is... Run an ethernet cable through the wall if you can. Drywall is easy to patch a small hole like that when you need to remove the cable.

Probably the reason why it doesn't come with wireless drivers is because I don't really see the point of a NAS using a wireless device. It's slow and unreliable for a central server.
I'm using a Gigabit link and I still feel it's too slow when I'm transferring gigs of data. That's only from one client, add more clients to the NAS and your wireless link becomes a huge bottleneck.

I agree with JoeSchmuck a cable is the way to go, a small hole in the wall, or two pass through boxes with the broom hairs would work too a little pricey though or 2 boxes off set a little so they don't hit each other inside the wall would be the prettiest.

Just wire it is my best advice.. Don't use wireless in the NAS ever.. Wireless clients are fine but you may have issues with connectivity/routers.. You could also try powerline ethernet.. Expect much lower performance then wired..

Why the hell was this thread brought back from November? I mean, we just answered a question from 4 moths ago!
