Moving System dataset to another pool

Hi,

I tried to move the System dataset to my secondary pool, because it prevents the disk in the primary pool to spindown (I hope that is the reason). I changed the location of the System dataset in the system settings. That created a .system folder on the secondary pool, but it did NOT create a seprate dataset. Addionaly the .system dataset on my first pool was not removed!

Can I just delete the old dadaset on the primary pool? Is there something I should do, to create the dataset on the secondary pool? I tried to restart the system, without luck!

The build I run is: FreeNAS-9.2.1.3-RELEASE-x64 (dc0c46b)

EDIT:
I tried to update to the newest release and now I run the follow build: FreeNAS-9.2.1.7-RELEASE-x64 (fdbe9a0)

I also realized, that my secondary pool is just a UFS device, that explains the missing datasets (shame on me!)
The gui stopped showing a .system dataset on my primary pool witht he update, but using "zfs list" there are still 4 datasets related to .system and subfolders!

Is it possible to use a UFS device for the system dataset (no errors in gui...!) can I just delete the .system datasets using command line?

The not deleting the old dataset is by design. This way the user can decide if there is anything they want in it before deleting the dataset. So yes, it is safe to delete the old dataset.

As for UFS, I don't know. If new logs are showing up there, I'd say it's working

I was using an UFS formatted USB key to host the .system and all worked flawlessly.

Looking for more reliability, I switched to a 2.5" hard disk (a WD Red 1TB, see mySignature) and ZFS. I put the Jails on it too. Working great with VERY low power consumption.

Nice, thank you both! I'll try to delete the datastores :)

I'm thinking of dong the same thing. However, I'm curious if you used a 1tb drive because of a requirement or something else? I think the system dataset doesn't use more than 100mb, and the jails are more less containers. The data a jail maps (like Plex) is stored outside the jail, right? I'm just wondering if I can accomplish the same with lets say a 250gb drive, or even less?

This thread is really old, so some things aren't relevant for the current version (like UFS). However, 1TB is completely overkill. 250GB is overkill as well, but will work. My guess is that 1TB was what he had. Try to find a 32GB HD these days.

Ok, thats what I thought. Thanks man. Didn't mean to revive an old thread but wanted some clarification so no one is mislead. The smallest drive I have on hand is 80GB. Could use that or pick up a cheap SSD. I believe the SSD would be optimal.
