I could not join the freenas machine to AD domain. So I decided to do a little manual configuration. BTW where is the smb.conf? it is not in /etc/samba as in Linux. Any more info on this configuration too?

Don't do this. smb.conf is regenerated from the FreeNAS config on bootup. Use the appropriate settings in the FreeNAS GUI to do what you need to do.

And of course stuff isn't necessarily going to be in the same place. This isn't Linux.

But my friend I did try to join AD as directed in the official documentations but to no avail. HTTP graphical tools are not working. Any other suggestions then?

Did you go to the machine locally? The FreeNAS box should tell you the exact IP you have to go to to setup FreeNAS. If you can't get to the GUI for setup and configuration something is very very wrong. FreeNAS expects you to manage it through the GUI, virtually exclusively. If you can't do that you need to figure out what is wrong as you are putting your server at extreme risk.

You shouldn't be having problems getting to the GUI regardless of if you have an AD domain to join, you managed to join it succesfully or not, or if you even want it to join the domain. The GUI should be working for you regardless.

I mean I can access GUI tools. Just even using them I cant make my freenas machine join AD and fetch domain users. Sorry for the confusion.

Ug, confused 2 different threads. :p I'm dealing with 2 threads where you and someone else are trying to edit files that shouldn't be edited. 99% of the time when someone wants to edit a file its because they aren't using the GUI and manual properly.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do. If it can't join the AD, and you are trying to create some accounts, the GUI allows you to do that. That's about the best option I can give as you really have provided no information on what you are trying to edit in smb.conf or why.

In short, I'd be willing to bet whatever you are trying to do can be done from the GUI. But leading to editing configuration files isn't going to work out for you in the long term. There's an overwhelming body of evidence that its just not a very smart thing to do.

Okay sorry friend. I was stuck with this issue of joining freenas to AD for about 2 months. just half an hour ago a fellow technician suggested me to go for freenas 8. downloaded the image from sourceforge and installed. since then every thing worked. :D
Sorry to have bothered you in the first place. It seems freenas 9.0.1 does have some incompetencies. Thanks for the help, Cyberjock and I am closing it ASAP.
