So, obviously 10K to replace a Drobo is on the outrageous side, what are my options?

That's a little bit too little information. What precisely is the hardware configuration of said Drobo and what are you doing with it. And why do you think 10k is outrageous? What did that Drobo cost? You cannot assume that anyone here is familiar with that product.

i emailed them asking for a similar nas and they assumed i wanted SSD drives, and reused to listen... only difference i asked for was a rack unit vs the mini desktop unit they offer, its amazing from an about $1500 desktop it went to 10k for them to rack that.

also, anyone who knows Drobo the 5n2 is not really a big unit... it's rather a entry-level nas....

It's just a quote, tell them you need something cheaper, ask what options they offer. Does that price include their support? You could always remove that.

@Dr. Ogg - if you provide the information @Patrick M. Hausen suggested: "What precisely is the hardware configuration of said Drobo and what are you doing with it. " and based on the fact that you apparently want a small-disk-count rackmount server (from your comments about the iXsystems desktop unit), you'll likely get several suggestions here about routes to follow. Relatively low $$ recommendations will almost surely include used servers from reputable eBay sources.

you have shared next to nothing. What exactly did you ask them for and what exactly did they quote for? Did you go back and say that the quote is over spec'ed for your needs, and re explain what you need?

Hi Dr Ogg, Apologies if we have our wires crossed.
We don't claim any expertise in Drobo and prefer to focus on technical needs. How much capacity (TB), reliability and performance do you need?

It is true that our low end product line is the FreeNAS Mini. It is focussed on professional-grade needs with ECC RAM (avoids data corruption) and IPMI. Drobo doesn't even specify the RAM or CPU used, so its difficult to do an apples-to-apples comparison. The CPU on the FreeNAS lets you run plugins and VMs.

The most similar product to Drobo is the FreeNAS Mini E which has 40TB of capacity and 4 x 1Gbe ports (twice the performance of the Drobo). Its a similar size and shape and has the lowest price. Exact price depends on capacity needed. The FreeNAS Mini XL+ expands to 80TB and 2 x 10Gbe. It has more cores and RAM for more plugins and VMs.

In your notes, you indicated a preference for a rack mount model. This is not the FreeNAS Mini line and moves up to our FreeNAS Certified line. These products are built for business and data centers and are more expensive. They use the latest Intel Xeon processors,16GB ECC DIMMs, and deliver significantly more performance, with scalability to over 1PB. If you want lower cost, we'd recommend the FreeNAS mini line. However, we can offer HDD solutions and well under the price you quoted.

Hopefully one of these products suits you, but its possible that we can't meet your specific needs. Rest assured that it's not that we don't want to help you, its just that we are small business and can only have a limited set of products that we inventory and ship. We provide the software for free so you can actually buy a new or 2nd hand platform that meets your specs. That is the awesome power of Open Source.

Feel free to email sales@ixsystems.com if we can help you. We can try again. Thanks for your consideration.
