Is FreeNAS an embedded install?

I have just installed FreeNAS and unlike NAS4Free, it didn't ask me what kind of installation to go for.

So is it an embedded one or a full installation?

Typically you install freenas on a USB flash drive or satadom. You will not be able to use the boot device for storage.

Thanks, I just wanted to know whether the OS is loaded into RAM or whether it runs from the usb stick.

You will know pretty quickly if your USB stick dies or some minion decides it's a good idea to yank out the stick. That's why it's a good idea to mirror them.

So is that a yes or a no to it running in RAM?

There's a lot of caching that takes place with ZFS, so much, if not most, of the system is going to be residing in RAM at any given time. FreeNAS doesn't build a RAMdisk and load itself into that, though.
