this might sound like crazy comparison, but speaking on the lower end of intel cpus, how will a Intel N3150 quad, with 8gb ram compare with an Android Box (Amlogic S912 Octa core) 2GB ram and Mali T820MP3 GPU.
which would have more raw power for video playback/kodi/etc.

In terms of raw computing power x86 destroys ARM, when just watching media you probably won't notice the difference, except maybe in the performance of the app itself.

Moving to offtopic since it has nothing to do with FreeNAS.

Android Box (Amlogic S912 Octa core) 2GB ram and Mali T820MP3 GPU.
That's an El-Cheapo SoC. They're dime a dozen and not particularly fast.
Intel N3150 quad
Recent Atom. Not particularly fast, but faster than your average El-Cheapo SoC. The limit is mostly going to be TDP. The highest TDP processor will generally win, in the mobile space.

Hardware is important but it isn't everything (I do think the N3150 would be better though).

I've recently bought an ASRock c70m1 SoC motherboard to play around with. It has a measly AMD c70 APU but with the right media player and perhaps more importantly, the right settings, I was able to get it to comfortably play high bitrate (20000kbps+) 1080i video.

[EDIT] I really did not even begin to make the point I was getting at...

Before I tried different media players and tweaking various settings, the c70m1 was not able to play the video in question... yet more evidence that VLC is no longer the undisputed it once was. I ended up going with SMPlayer with a few tweaks. Only then would the video play correctly.

I could playback video content using my old RPI but now it sits collecting dust.
