Hello,

So that's a noob question and kind of not related to FreeNAS so please don't slap me.
However I believe some of you, FreeNAS users, have the experience so I am asking here since a Google search didn't gave me any answer.

I have purchased that drive from eBay. The drive came without a PCIe adapter. Then I did purchase the adapter.
I intend to use it as a Slog device on my FreeNAS server.

Problem is, it is not detected by my Server on any PCIe port.
Just to be clear I am using Proxmox as a host and FreeNAS as a guest OS (I know, not good for production use).

I have already been able to share a Samsung EVO 970 drive as a cache device for my pool and it's been working great.
When using lspci on linux I am supposed to see the drive so I can pass it through but at the moment I can't see it.
I have tried 2 different PCIe ports and both did not work.

Now I can see that the adapter as a SATA port kind on the PCB but I thought I was not supposed to use it since it's plugged in the PCIe port.
Though I could be needing some power from the Sata power cable to fully power the drive or should it work out of the PCIe port?

Can anyone confirm that please?

I am using this exact setup, freshly installed as of about two weeks ago. If it helps, I'm using this Startech U.2 to PCIE adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072JK2XLC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

No additional cabling or power required, installed into my Dell R720 and detected right away. Added to my pool and has been working fine. If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll try to answer as best I can.
Sorry, I should also specify I'm not using Proxmox, I'm just using FreeNAS installed baremetal.

Thanks for your feedback!
I don't have the same adapter, I bought a cheap Chinese one from eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PCIe-x4-to...00-P3700-Series-SSD-Adapter-Card/333640913033

I believe Proxmox, so Linux, should be able to see the drive showing up as a PCIe device if it was detected properly.
The fact that it is not even detected is worrisome.
Anyhow, you've confirmed that the power supply was unecessary so that's great info here.

I'll now contact the 2 sellers, see what they have to say.
One of the 2 product must have an issue.

Not a problem! It's possible that it could be an issue with the hardware, especially if you've double checked that none of the PCIE lanes are disabled in BIOS or anything.

Does running lsblk in a command line give you any output that would line up with the drive? I'm guessing it would be same as what you'd see in Proxmox, but I can't recall, it's been a while since I've used it.

Unfortunately, it's too often the case nowadays cheap Chinese == fake. Go with the StarTech.
