Hey, has anyone an idea how to install an PCMCIA Card on the FreeNAS System?
I have a very old Gericom Blockbuster Advance 2680 XL+ Laptop with FreeNAS 9.1.1 on it. I know it's not the best Hardware to run a NAS but I don't have high expectations of it really...
Right now the FreeNAS system runs on the internal HDD and i have 2 external USB drives formatted as UFS as my network storage.
So now i tried to install a PCMCIA Cardbus to get more USB slots. I got it very cheap thats why I wanted to give it a try. (its this one: http://www.pearl.de/a-PE1512-1516.shtml?query=pcmcia)
My plan is to buy an PCMCIA card with 2 eSATA slots in order to connect the hard drives via SATA but I don't want to buy it before i know that I can get the PCMCIA card to work.
When I put it in, the system restarts and it stops at the point you can see on the photo. I assume that I have to install a driver first but i have no idea how to do that. The description says that the card only works on windows so the driver-cd also only contains the windows driver. Maybe you have any suggestions or hints?
It's my first time working with FreeNAS and FreeBSD so please be anxious about me =)

This is a very ill advised plan. You should not be trying to use FreeNAS with laptop hardware. It's meant for server hardware, it needs server hardware to run well, and I'm not surprised it crashed on bootup.

Okay thanks for the response. Do you have an advise which OS would work best? Actually so far the System works pretty well...but for how long is the question.

I've got a Xircom Pocket LAN in case you need any parallel port to Ethernet love for your laptop...

That's because you should choose based on what you feel comfortable doing and what your hardware can handle. There is no "best" answer for your situation.

I've got a Digital HiNote Ultra 2000 with four (yes four) pcmcia slots... Pentium 166 and Winmodem too! It ran FreeBSD back in the day!

Thinking to see if I can hook up some USB HDD's to a PCMCIA USB card and run FreeNAS on it for network backups. Wonder if FreeBSD still has a Xircom parallel driver...
