Increasing Storage - Single Pool with 2 VDEV's

Hi there,

I checked the forum but could not find a definite answer for TrueNAS Scale as most posts around expanding storage capacity was related to Core/legacy versions.

I'm running TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.4.2 with
  • 8 port SAS controller for storage (OS is on a different controller and SSD)
  • 1 Pool - 2 VDEVs - RAIDZ1
    • VDEV 1
      • 4 x 4TB HDD
    • VDEV 2
      • 4x 8TB HDD
I'm starting to run out of space and I'm looking to upgrade VDEV 1 to 4x 8TB.
Reading posts of TrueNAS Core / Legacy, upgrading should be as simple as replacing 1 drive at a time with a 8TB disk, waiting for the resilver to be done before replacing the next. This will keep the VDEV size unchanged until replacement of the last of the last of the 4 disks at which point the VDEV should expand to the full capacity.

Is this statement true for TrueNAS Scale as well? Or do I need to follow a different process to increase the storage size?

Thanks !

Yes.

Two things;
  1. The choice for size of replacement drives does not have to be the same as the existing. You can use 10TB or 6TB, what ever is cheapest and suitable today. Even mis-matched sizes are fine, as ZFS will use the minimum size for growing the vDev.
  2. You can use a motherboard SATA connection for the first larger disk. This allows "replace in place", meaning your RAID-Z1 vDev is never without redundancy. ZFS will basically mirror the disk to be removed, and when this temporary mirror is complete, will remove the old disk. Then you can physically remove the old disk.
