Hi,
want to use an "old" desktop to install Truenas on. Keeps hanging on "Loading Kernel".
Secure boot is disabled, booting in Legacy doesn't show my thumb drive.

any ideas pls?

Proc: i5-8500 T
Mem: 16GB DDR4
M.2 NVMe ssd 250GB
SATA 1TB

You need to play a bit more with your BIOS settings (or maybe see if you can find a BIOS update which may get you past the issue).

TrueNAS can install as UEFI or legacy, but where it is stopping seems to indicate some other problem.

Check if there are any BIOS updates by HP and apply them. Check if it boots then.

Remove/disable every removable or configurable component - hard disk, NVME SSDs, disable SATA controller, disable network, ...
If it boots then, re-insert/re-enable one by one to find out which one prevents booting.

Oh, and absolutely disable any "RAID" feature of your SATA controller. "AHCI mode" is what the desired setting is frequently called.

All BIOS updates have been done.
RAID feature isn't available on this device. will check with the disable of components.

thx.

everything disabled: storage controller intel optane, turbo-boost, multi-proc, virtualization, M.2 SSD, M.2 WLAN/BT, PCIE/PCI SERR# interrupt, still no luck. still stuck on same place.

Then it looks like your hardware is incompatible with TrueNAS.
