Hi there,

In our office we are setting up a FreeNAS using a HP NC375T. (Also known as the Broadcom NetXtreme II)
For some reason the card is not recognized. Guess I was wrong thinking the card was supported by the bce-4 drivers .... ??

We are running Freenas 8.2 Beta3 amd64

Do I have to compile and install any drivers manually for this card ?
I have a Ubuntu x64 running on my desktop to exec any compiling jobs ...

Thanks, Dj

It might be very helpful if I knew how to compile drivers for FreeNAS.
I found some drivers (not specifically for FreeBSD though) on the HP website. The title states 'linux drivers' so they might just work.

Anyone who can provide me a step-by-step from source to installation of network drivers in general ?

Linux and FreeBSD (Unix) are not binary compatible, so trying to compile drivers on Ubuntu for FreeNAS won't work. It's too long and complicated of a process to explain, especially to a NOOB. Possibly the easiest thing to tell you to try is grab some FreeBSD "8.2" live CD, boot from that and see if your network card works. Then identify the driver ".ko"/module file and copy it to FreeNAS in /boot/kernel and then add it from the GUI to System->Tunables so it gets loaded on boot. Unix is like the great great grandfather of Linux, maybe even "great great great"....

EDIT: It is not advised to use Beta releases in an office/production environment, they are still not stable... RC releases are probably a little safer.

Thanks protosd. This will get me started.
I'm already downloading a livefs of FreeBSD. 8.0.2 is not available anymore on the FTP-servers, so I am trying 8.1
Hopefully those drivers are backwards comp with the 8.0.2 version .... (fingers crossed)

What is the update-policy on FreeNAS ethernet drivers? When can users expect the NC375T drivers are a piece of the pie?

Ps. We installed the BETA3 hoping the correct drivers were available there. No luck. We will not use a beta as a production. Thanks for the advice !

You need to make sure you find FreeBSD 8.2, that is what FreeNAS is built on. FreeBSD 8.1 won't work, it needs to be 8.2. The version numbers between FreeBSD and FreeNAS don't correspond at this point. This is why they skipped version 8.1 and are going from 8.0x to 8.2x.

The drivers in FreeNAS are updated based on what updates are available for FreeBSD version 8.2. They don't include every driver from FreeBSD, but usually the more common ones.

It's bed time here, good luck!

Hello, I know this is an old thread, but just wondering if there has been any new driver development for this quad NIC? I'm hoping to use this card for my next FreeNAS build.

Thanks

That's not a question for this forum. You should be looking at FreeBSD development. The short answer is "almost certainly no".
