I'm been reading the iSCSI guides but it doesn't look like I can achieve what I want to do:

I have an existing ZFS DataSet and I want to share the entire dataset as an iSCSI target to my main computer.

From the documentation it sounds like you can only share a single file? Or is the meaning to have a file represent the iSCSI file system to which you can copy data?

Is there a way to have an existing dataset with data be the iSCSI target?

You can't share existing files on a dataset that were created outside of iscsi with iscsi. Iscsi isn't really a file sharing protocol, but a block sharing protocol, in essence.

What you are looking to do cannot be done. Perhaps you should explain why you want to do it this way and we can find a better option for you.

Thank you for the help.
I was just wondering if it's possible, that's all. I find it more intuitive to have a drive show up as a local storage on my Mac than a network share. It will also allow me to store my Apple Photos library there, while still being able to backup to my offsite backup provider.

On any remotely decent OS, it's the exact same thing from the end-user's perspective. The only difference being that iSCSI is orders of magnitude slower.
