My boot pool consists of 2 x 240GB SSD drives in mirror of which FreeNAS consumes less than 1GB so i was wondering how i can make good use of the remaining storage space.

One thing that came to mind and seems like a good thing to do, is to move my existing plex-jail to the SSD's for performance and also security in case my Raidz2 data pool degrades for whatever reason.

I already read this THREAD but since it is quite old i thought it would be wise if this is still the best way? I am looking for a step by step guide to set up the SSD's properly for this and move the plex-jail over from my data-pool and also ensure that future jails or plugin installs automatically are done on the SSD's.

If there are any other usefull things i could do with the SSD space, also open for suggestions.

Many thanks, Dominique

In FreeNAS the boot drive(s) is/are exclusively used for the boot pool.
From the docs:
"1.4.2. The Operating System Device
The FreeNAS® operating system is installed to at least one device that is separate from the storage disks."

Short answer: you can't. What you can do, though, is create a boot pool and an additional data pool on the same drive.
This is in no way officially supported. But given that I know quite well how most all of this works under the hood, I'm running this setup myself and I am pretty confident, it won't bite me in the future. I'll do a write up of the necessary steps in the next couple of minutes in a separate post.

You will need to export your configuration and reinstall, though, since you cannot shrink a boot pool.

Kind regard,
Patrick

Thank you for this, Patrick. I knew I had seen this method described "somewhere" but I could not find it this morning.

Thanks for this. Seems like a good solution. I only need to figure out how i need to go about in creating the 2 pools as there will be no OS installed.
