I found information on this thread as detailed by joeschmuck to be a helpful starting point: ataidle seems to have had an effect as my power consumption was down about 5 watts, and the smartctl reported (2)Standby, although the Start Stop Count value doesn't change right away (checking again now, I see it's gone up from 86 to 103 in the space of a day).
So, how do I allow all the drives to spin down, and make that setting stick as a normal part of the configuration when I reboot?
(I suppose I can adjust the time to suit my usage patterns, so it would be nice if it was easy to adjust in one place. Changing the spin-down policy based on time of day or more complex observed usage would be even better! (On second thought, time-of-day isn't useful for my chaotic un-schedule; but it needs some way to "know") )
Thanks in advance,
—John
