This is the first time I have tried using TrueNas and I am trying to flash it to a USB but every time I do, my computer reports that I need to format the drive and the process ultimately doesn't work. I have tried using the ISO file version 12.0-U5.1.

I don't know what I am doing wrong or what I am missing. I have tried using many different flashing tools and I do not have the ability to use a disk/CD to flash instead.

I have tried using several 64gb USB drives but none of them have seemed to work. Any help is appreciated!

1. It is specifically not recommended to run TrueNAS off a consumer USB flash drive, as they will not last long due to continual log writes to the flash drive. A HD or SSD is recommended. If you don't have a free SATA bay/slot, you might be able to use a HD/SSD in a USB enclosure.
2. Download the installer image and flash to a USB flash drive. Use https://www.balena.io/etcher/?ref=etcher_menu to copy to USB flash drive
3. Connect USB installer flash drive and a SATA HD/SSD (or HD/SSD in a USB enclosure).
4. Your system must support booting off a USB installer flash drive or you will have to burn the ISO image to a CD. You may need to enter system BIOS to change boot order or bypass the boot order. You will need to refer to your system motherboard manual.
5. Boot off the USB installer flash drive, install TrueNAS to the SATA HD/SSD (or HD/SSD in a USB enclosure). Boot and install using UFEI mode if supported. Note TrueNAS will use the entire SSD for the installed image. Unlike other OS installs, you will not be able to use the free space for data. You will need separate drive(s) for data. Do not ask how to use boot drive free space for storing data or you will be severely scorned.
6. Reboot system with the USB installer flash drive removed. You may once again need to enter BIOS to change boot order to select the SATA HD/SSD (or HD/SSD in a USB enclosure).
