I have a SuperMicro X9DRL-3F Dual Processor server motherboard..

I purchased a Arctic Freezer I11 heat sink before getting the board...
Its a little to wide..
And I will have issues in the future if I need to add or remove ram on the right side of the attached picture...

Anyone have a recommendation on something a little smaller...

No recommendations off-hand, other than to suggest that the stock Intel heatsink would probably fit. But I realize you may not have the stock heatsink.

Otherwise, it looks like you're going to have to measure the available space and then shop for heatsinks based on their width, researching the manufacturer's websites to find one that will fit.

The picture doesn't show how much room there is below the heatsink. I thought the cooler I bought was too wide too, but a careful look showed that it sat high enough so there would be clearance between the top of the RAM stick and the bottom of the cooler.

I'm sure he doesn't, because Xeon E5s don't come with stock heatsinks. ;)
Good to know. My E3-series Xeon came with a heatsink.

Thanks for the responses.. I will be buying a used CPU.. E5 series so NO it won't come with a Heat sink...

I'm only going to have one cpu...
My current Heatsink will fit on the motherboard. But the probably is it overlaps some of the memory.. So if I have to upgrade or replace memory than I will have to remove the heat sink from the CPU.. I would prefer to NOT have to do that..

So if I can find a heat sink that isnt as big and gets the job done.. Than that would be great...

Again I appreciate all the responses.....
I know how to build a computer.. It's just been a while, since I've actually had to spec things out and buy everything.. But its been a great learning process....

You don't want to run your system without a heatsink... you'll fry the CPU!

Another question.. The Heatsink that Supermicro sells for this mobo blows the air side ways .. The intel has the fan on top which blows the air straight up right above the CPU...

Does this make a difference...

Yes, I know I have to have a heatsink.. I meant I didn't want to have to remove the heatsink just to change the memory and than have to reapply the thermal paste.. I'm just going to find a square heat sink that is about the size of the LGA2011 block...

Understood...

Usually, you want the heatsink fan to blow towards the rear of the case.

Down will cool the motherboard at the same time. Across will be a little more effective and move air out of the case. Either is fine and it doesn't matter.

I posted two links in my original post...the second link has an Intel fan that blows sideways. Pretty much the exact same as the supermicro you found. Either of those will do the job.

I am not sure how the base/mount of the heatsink looks like, but I had the same issue a while ago and was able to mount the heatsink in the other direction.
