Has anyone installed TrueNas Scale on a QNAP TS-659 Pro ?

Hi Gurus

I recently got my hands on a QNAP TS-659 Pro and I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed TrueNAS Scale on this device?

I understand I'll need to do the RAM upgrade but I'll tackle wet step if someone has managed to install TrueNAS

I've been running it on an HS-453DX for a few months. Discreet and fanless, to fit in at my in-laws' house. Partly for their macOS Time Machine backup; partly for my two-way replications doing buddy backup over a WireGuard VPN.

Obviously I needed to add RAM, and an mSATA boot pool. And it's not ECC; that would be a real concern if it held anything important. I consider these multi-site backups to be best-effort/replaceable.

But it is quiet. And has surprised me by maintaining a comfortable ~38°C with two 8TB WD Red drives, low usage, and no apps. "Not drawing attention to itself" in this case is both high praise and the bar for entry.

How do you find the speed of the interface and are you missing features or have you noticed any instability?

@ddos127 you ought to remove the DOM. Its 512MB so utterly useless to you. And if you remove it you can always add it back again to return to the old QNAP OS.
Your biggest problem is memory as apparently the maximum memory is 2GB which is far less than the reccomended minimum of 8GB

Admin UI performance feels comparable to my larger systems. (Accessed remotely through WireGuard.) If anything, maybe slightly faster since it's only representing one two-drive mirrored pool with a handful of datasets. No apps.

The first set of RAM I ordered failed memtest86 burn-in, but since replacing that I haven't seen any hint of trouble on that machine.

My next smallest, custom build at a different house (a Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F in a Cooler Master HAF XB EVO case) is less consistent. So I'm finding out what could go wrong and what to look for. But the upgraded fanless HS-453DX has shown me zero drama so far.

In every case: TrueNAS SCALE itself is performing well, updating cleanly, and supplying peace of mind to all involved.

The QNAP TS-659 Pro is well below the minimum specifications required for CORE/SCALE.

sorry for butting in, but i assume that ts-653a is fine for scale/core? at least when i installed truenas core onto ts-653a, i did not experience issues.

ts-659 pro II which i also have, i never attempted, but based on what was said i'm glad i didn't waste time on that xd.

I didn't need scale so went the core route and I can honestly say, the NAS is running perfectly fine without a single glitch, hasn't given me a single issue to date

and there is absolutely no issues with the performance either
