GUI access password problem

Hi
I am having an issue logging into the "root" account as see the "Passwords do not match" every time. I have reset the password locally through the local menu. I then try to log in to the GUI but I still receive the "Passwords do not match" prompt. I have done this sequence several times now with the same outcome. I am sorry for this question I know I can default the box but I have a good working config and LOTS of data stored so that would be painful. Thanks for any help.

Beware that the console may not match your keyboard's locale without further configuration. Stick to alphanumeric characters when resetting the password, then set it to whatever you desire.

Ok how does one reset the root password if lost or no one knows it. What is the procedure to reset root password.
