Hello,
I'm currently in the process of turning one of my old computers into a NAS for data storage (I'm too cheap to buy a dedicated system). I can boot into FreeNAS and connect to the configuration page, but the GPU overheats to a massive degree, even with no monitor attached. When I run windows on the same machine however, the GPU returns to a more normal temperature. I don't know what the problem is, and could really use some help. I hope somebody is able to help me soon.

Thanks, bd1113

PS: Hardware Specs:
ATI Radeon HD 5770
i7 960
12GB DDR3

A quick Google search shows that this is normal behavior for the HD5770 - apparently Windows had/has drivers that control the fan and keep the GPU cool - absent drivers seems you will need your BIOS settings to control the fans. My guess is that you need to determine which fan power connector you have the gpu hooked up to and the study the BIOS listings to find which settings and what to use.
You'll be able to get more consideration and possibly help here if you observe the forum rules, especially about the minimum required information. That said, your question is "some way off the reservation" for a recommended FreeNAS hardware configuration so help may be limited.

Why not take out the GPU?

remove the gpu

since you didn't provide enough hardware info I'm going to assume you don't actually need the gpu.

The motherboard starts to beep without any graphics card installed, and there is no integrated graphics. Also sorry, but I can't find the model of motherboard.

I found a temporary solution to the problem and it seems to be running fine™ for now. Thanks for the help.
