'vmTrueNAS' is the hostname of this box and it goes to my SMB share. but where is the 'truenas' coming from?

see screenshots

something is broadcasting/advertising the 'truenas' hostname.
the only services running are SMB, FTP, SSH, and SMART.
network and SMB hostname is set to 'vmTrueNAS'

Hello @stone

Can you confirm (with a screenshot) that your hostname under Network / Global Configuration is set to 'vmTrueNAS' as well? You've already sorted the SMB name.

You may need to uncheck, save, and then recheck the mDNS (micro DNS) service announcement option, as this is what controls visibility under Network in MacOS. Restarting the SMB service (and potentially the server itself) might be necessary if it was changed live.

Alternatively, it might be a locally cached entry on MacOS - it might be a stale record that hasn't been removed yet.
