Hello all!

I'm looking for some advice on doing a FreeNAS build. I'll be using it for basic home server tasks.

  • Media providing/gathering through Plex, Sonarr/Radarr, NZBget.
  • NAS to offload some of my storage needs, backing up PC/Phone
  • Running a VM for learning linux.(Only one)
  • Future use: CCTV for home security, Router(Pfesne/untangled.etc)
My current build plan:

CPU:FX-6300(Own)
RAM:2x4GB Kingston HyperX ram(Plan on buying another 2x4Gb for 16GB-$25)
MOBO:any mATX board that supports 6 drives. -$50~
DRIVES:3xSeagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM 1x1TB Tobishia Drive shucked from an Old laptop
CASE:Any of them that supports 6drives for future exp-$50
PSU:EVGA 500watt.-$50

Current pricing from used ram and board and new PSU is about 175-200.

I know for around the same price you can get a r710 server rack. While that's really what I'd love to do, I also need to keep it semi-cheap right now. Size and noise is also a problem currently(Won't be once I buy a house in the spring of 2020)

So for $200 would this be the best route currently?

TIA

desktop parts are not recommenced. at all. you can use them, but are less likely to get help here if doing so.
the use of desktop parts might be why this post got no replies.
that said, it *should* run fine.
