Hello guys,

First of all sorry if this is a stupid question but i only found freenas related posts.

I'm currently running a truenas deployment with a debian VM deployed inside running a whole bunch of docker containers.
I'm gonna do a complete hardware upgrade because currently me setup is drawing about 60w in idle and i want it to be a bit less power hungry since its running 24/7

Using truenas scale, can i just migrate to a new motherboard, cpu & ram or will i have to backup everything?
If not, any feedback on best practices / options?

Thanks alot in advance your time is much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Niels

Yep, with two caveats:
  • If the new hardware requires a different boot method (Legacy vs. UEFI) that what you're currently using, that would be a problem--in that case, save your config file from the existing installation, do a clean install on the new hardware, then upload your saved config
  • The new system may give you a different network interface name than was present on the old system, even with the same hardware. If so, you may need to reconfigure your network interface.

This is not what you asked, but if you care about the data you should always back it up (and test your backups).

If you don't care about potentially starting from scratch you can go for it. My Ubuntu VMs all survived a complete hardware swap.
