1. not sure how\where to access dashboard
2. Windows machine on same network(on wifi) cannot find the freenas i just created.

tried to find answer to these question by searching forums, but failed to find it.

From FreeNAS, can you ping other devices on the same LAN? Likewise, can you ping the FreeNAS box by IP?

thank you!

I learned it hard way, when i set up FreeNas , i did static IP, which did not work. Later i change IPv4 then it worked.

Now i Have new issue, Pool i created is accessible in windows machine but cannot write anything to it, and cannnot edit permission on Pool"Root dataset permissions cannot be edited"

not sure what mistaking i am making here.

Don't use the root pool for data storage. Create a dataset, and then you can set the permissions for that.

thank you @Samuel Tai .

MY first build (Issues)
Following is the hardware(costed only $20)
old PC: DELL 750 BTX mother board
Ram : 4gb
Storage: 3tb
Running free has on internal Hard drive.

is it working ? Yes, Performance is very slow.
Copying files to Freenas takes huge amount of time (i.e. 5 gb file take 7-14 mins).
copying file from Freenas to Mac \windows take more than 15 mins(same 5gb file).

I am planning to build new one but want to be careful in picking hardware for my next build.($500-$1000 target range)
use case
1. home server (used by 3-4 ppl)
2. Storage 10-15tb
3. Store family media and data files as needed.
4 Plex to server media for smart tvs\tablets\phones .

Request you to guide me with helpful forum in ixcommunity, I did look into number of post by other users but still confused on how to start with new build.

thanks.

4 GB is much too low. FreeNAS needs a minimum of 8 GB RAM, and only starts exhibiting good performance at 16 GB. You won't need a very powerful CPU (I get by with an i3-1230L v3), but you do need RAM, the more the better.

In your case, you should get a couple of 10TB drives, and create a mirror pool, which is the simplest pool topology that still provides redundancy.

my current machine doesn't allow more than 4gb of ram(4gb is the max it can take).
so is the reason I am planning for a new one.

I have looked at Dell PowerEdge r410,610,710,720 willing to use one of these as they are mostly well build and I only need to add extra peripherals on use case.
any suggestion on this server hardware for home use(will keep them installed in underground\cellar .

thanks.
