Hello everyone !

Do you think it's a good idea to mine Monero on a TrueNAS today with an AMD Ryzen™ 9 5950X?

If so, which hardware configuration would you recommend me ?
I live in France so electricity is relatively cheap but I just wonder if this was a good idea to set up a NAS for both usages

I plan to use TrueNAS for media server usage + Nextcloud + Bitwarden

You'd have to setup a vm to mine because you're not supposed to install additional linux packages to the base OS. Truenas is an appliance os which depends on certain package versions to function correctly. As a safety measure the package manager for the base OS (apt) has been disabled for almost a year now.

Thank you, I didn't know that.
Will it still be safe ? I guess so because it will be in a closed environment but I prefer to ask because my knowledge of TrueNAS is limited.
As my knowledge of TrueNAS is limited, I need an easy to set up solution.
I'd rather prefer TrueNAS Core but Docker would be useful for Bitwarden for self-hosting reasons obviously but I can renounce to that.

You can run bitwarden, nextcloud and a mediaserver like plex in a jail (its like a docker container but for bsd) or in your favorite linux vm using docker.
For the mining i would set up a ubuntu server vm and run it using docker, if its available.

Edit: fixed typos.

Thank you for the suggestion !

I started to do a PCPartPicker (https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/Nns8Jf) list with the composants I own or want but I have no idea on what to choose about :

- Motherboard
- RAM
- Case
- Power supply

About storage, I already own some WD RED.

i would appreciate any help !

The first thing you should check if those drives you already own are CMR or SMR drives.
SMR drives are not usable recommended for zfs.

Most forum members don't use amd cpu's because they thend to lean more to the used intel enterprise gear.
For AMD i would recommend the asrock rack mainboard.
Avoid cheap gaming boards, their components are not specced for 24/7 nas/server usage, especially avoid mainboard with realtek nics.
What formfactor do you want for the case? Tower or 19" rack mount?
How many HDDS do you want the case to hold? The number of HDDs will also be vital for choosing your PSU. If you underspecc the PSU, you could get Problems when the HDDs draw more power during boot ups.

A little bit more information would be useful for us to recommend anything.

We have hardware suggestions in the Resources section and also a Power Supply Sizing Guide. If you want less specific guidance but would like to know more about the whys of it all, see my original "So you want some hardware suggestions".

Understood.
Thank you for the suggestion about the motherboard.
I don't have any preference about the formfactor.
I don't need that much HDDS, I already have 2 HDDS of 4TB each (CMR) even if I would prefer to have 4 slots for peace of mind.

I've found this build with an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X.

I'm thinking about it but I'm not sure it's a good idea to risk $1500 on a machine when it's my first NAS (i.e. I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it if there's a technical problem), for the assembly, I might be able to get help if there's a problem.

It would have been great if someone had offered their services as a freelancer, for example, to assemble TrueNAS NAS units for a fee.
But I don't think that exists.
The TrueNAS Mini look incredible, but I'd have liked a more powerful CPU.
