Is the number you select in the APM dropbox the value used for the -B switch in hdparm?

on a related note, is there ANY source available that describes the implementation of these numbers for WD Red drives? Google did me no good, but maybe someone else has more luck. If not, I might just contact WD directly about it.

I don't know, but the descriptions would suggest so. Regardless, most people who participate here would say to leave it disabled.

I recommend leaving it disabled. Only the disk manufacturer will be the one to know what a given value actually does as the disk's firmware will actually carry out the actions based on the APM value.
