Is this a requirement or just a suggestion? Are there ramifications if datasets/zvols are added after data is already on one dataset in the pool?

Mostly a suggestion.

Are there ramifications if datasets/zvols are added after data is already on one dataset in the pool?

If your data structure contains directories where you later want datasets, that's potentially more difficult, but nothing that can't be worked around if really needed.

If you needed to work with quotas on zvols or datasets, that's also better set in advance to stop one or other taking over the pool, but again, can be corrected after the fact.
