I have set -up a new machine. I got everything set-up and ran into the following problem. ( point me to any post that may help)
I can not move data into my new dataset. I get the following," You need permission to preform this action", I am the only one listed at the moment. Btw, I only have this one dataset made at this time.
What have I missed?
Thanks,

Your post is worthless without that info

Then lets preface my info with. This is a temporary machine while I collect the parts for my permanent build. To learn on. I had this machine running with 32 bit and 2 gigs of ram. I had little problems, with the exception I had no add ons to work with. Everyone gave me so much grief about what I had I made some small changes,
Dell OptiPlex 755
Bios A22
Intel2 Duo Core CPU E6550 @ 2.33Ghz
4 gig ddr2 sdram
Freenas 9.2.1.8 64 bit
3 drives, 750g, 500g, 250g
Protocol HTTP
Client ZFS
I had to reformat the drives with third party software to get them to show up. I made my Vol. and added a Dataset. Now I can not move anything into the folder.
I get the following," You need permission to preform this action",
My user page,
User ID: 1001
Username: Jeff
Primary Group:
wheel
Home Directory: /mnt/vol1/

Shell:
csh
Full Name: Jeff
E-mail:
Password:
Password confirmation:

Disable password login:
Lock user:
Permit Sudo:
SSH Public Key:
Home Directory Mode:
OwnerGroupOther
Read xxx
Writexxx
Executexxx
Auxiliary groups: None selected

Ok, I think I covered all the bases. Let me know what I missed.

4 gigs of RAM. Seriously.

I am in the same boat as you (my new stuff will all be here by Friday) practicing on on old desktop system with some old hardware to learn freeNAS. Like you I tried to do this with less than the minimum amount of RAM. You are going to have so many unexplainable problems trying to work with your system due to the limited memory you'll be pulling you hair out wondering why things don't work like they should.

If you truly want to play around with your test system and not just chase your tail get 4 more gigs of memory.

cifs or nfs? I'm going to go with CIFS. In windows if you map a network drive and use the ip(\\192.168.x.x\share) and the name of the share you created it should then ask your for user and password. Use 'Jeff' and your password you created on freenas. If that works then your share is setup correctly. Next you need to validate your dataset, in your case it's /mnt/vol1(which is something you should do). The permissions on that dataset need to allow for your users to write to it or for your users group to write to it or just let everyone write to it with the other options.

Thank you for all your replies.
First, I have ram on its way. My research says I can only put 2 Gigs per slot. Correct?
Second, Yes I am using CIFS. I had the drive mapped already. So I disconnected it and mapped it again with the IP address. Unfortunately it did not ask me for a user name or password. I have read the manual on shares and can not find any mistakes. Doesn't mean they are not there. I am still reading, looking for a definition on "validating my dataset". If you can tell me where I would find that reference.
I have printed the manual and been reading. Going very slow as I have to discover the language as I go.
I have looked at all the permission's that I can find. I have Changed them to Jeff and checked all boxes.
I have disconnected all the drives associated with vol1. Run out of things to try.

2G per slot is probably it. But it wasn't worth the money. You've basically spent money to max out hardware that now meets the minimum in FreeNAS. Not cool when your hardware max is the software's minimum. That's why we tell people not to try to reuse their old hardware.

And let's not get started on the fact that ECC RAM isn't even an option for you. ;)

Thanks, ican reperpose the computer after my build. If i build. It's starting to look you have to be a reactor operator to work with this stuff. Lol
I have over 20 years working on cnc machines. Do i have some experience in computer operations. It is not my specialty. I mainly stay on the mechanical side of things.
My very first build was a very old Compaq machine with 512 Meg of ram. It worked great. Just Had no plug ins.
Don't even dry it, I know. Just saying. Right now I'm learning. All my important info is backed up to Carbonite through my employer.
I want a media machine for the house. I have one of post build list I am using to buy from. Hoping Santa will help me out.
