Can I use a HP P822 Raid controller in the DL 180 G6?

I'm working on installing TrueNAS SCALE on a DL180 G6 that was recently purchased. I was unaware that this card would not allow HBA mode. As I've come to find out that the workaround of setting the drives to all be raid0 is not recommended I'm looking at buying another card the SmartArray P822.

My question is:
Has anyone swapped the P812 with the P822 and had a successful install when HBA mode is enabled?

You can get a P822 to go into HBA mode, but just don't. That will use the ciss driver which isn't well supported in FreeNAS. Those cards are also expensive with no benefit in a FreeNAS/TrueNAS use case. Get one of the HP labled LSI 9207 or similar card that is just an HBA. It will work great and be less expensive.

Thanks! I've also been looking at the LSI 9211-8i on Amazon already in IT mode. From what I've read this would be a plug and play for the DL180 G6. Is this accurate? If I get an LSI card that is just an HBA it should be plug and play?

Decided to go with this: LSI 9211-8i P20 IT Mode DELL H310 6Gbps. Will this still work in the HP DL180 G6?

You can have a "successful install" with almost any card. That's not the issue. It's stability long term that's a problem. Please refer to

and please do note that CISS based cards are particularly bad.
