Can I control my fan speed via TrueNAS?

Hey, I want to control the fan speed. While I could install a 3rd party tool which does the job, if I upgrade to a new version the config would be gone and the fan speed would be back to the current, quite loud one.
How can I control it to be supported after the next upgrades too?

My script may be useful for this but if and how well it works (and how much customization is required) depends on exactly what hardware you are running.
