Can’t reach TrueNAS through browser

I have gone through the setup YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/P6O1mYgf0eo?si=ZlF9f9j7WzD7htJq. And had to stop it because I had two issues; firstly my IP was 0.0.0.0, I ignored it and changed it to a static IP which said it has taken place successfully. So I moved onto the next step which was accessing it through a browser; this didn’t work as it just took a while then said “could not reach” I’ve tried using different IP addresses, and nothings worked, I reinstalled it, same result. The intended server is an Old gaming rig with 8gbs of Ram, I’m not particularly experienced with servers so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Why on Earth would you take advice on protecting your data from a company that literally only makes money if you lose your data?

Can you actually ping the machine? Can it ping anything else? Is the network actually up?

Not good, but one thing at a time.

When it is a unique IP I come up with no, when I just copy my actual IP yes, but I can only assume in that circumstance I’m pinging myself. I don’t think the network is actually up, not sure why.

Haha no it’s not good, one day I’ll have a proper server, but for now, on my student budget I was hoping it would work.

What do you mean? That's an odd way of describing what you're doing... Can you be more specific and list exactly the addresses you're trying to use?

So I originally just tried 192.168.1.5, didn’t work so I thought it was my actual IP so I did Ipconfig on a separate device and used that, it didn’t work either. None of the guides were clear on whether or not it’s just one I make up within the parameters it says on when making a static IP. I also tried 192.168.1.23 and 192.168.0.23. Again not entirely sure what I’m doing haha.

Well, you can't just pick an arbitrary integer between zero and 2^32. In simple terms, you need to stay within your subnet, which is in a reserved segment for private networks. Typically, this a /24, meaning the last octet, e.g. 192.168.1.xxx. So 192.168.1.23 and 192.168.0.23 are incompatible in this scenario.

I'd recommend you start with some networking basics before you try to setup a server. It's like reading and driving, you could kinda muddle through as an illiterate, but it's a painful process best avoided. Someone can probably recommend some suitable resources.

Okay so on this, I didn’t realise it would be this hard lol, so I think I worked out my range, I used a calculator, checked on my routers page and confirmed with an AI… probably as useful as a one winged bat. But I believe I’ve chosen a proper IP, it is at the point where I can ping it on CMD and it receives 4/4. And yet it still does not work on the browser

re0: stopping TXQ timed out
Not good. Wrong, possibly unsupported type of network interface. Don't use Realtek network gear.

You reckon that could be the main issue, I read others having the same issue and it explains why it came up with 0.0.0.0 when I did the fresh install, is there a way I can not use Realtek? Or is there an alternative that is better supported with Realtek despite how rubbish the NIC is for this purpose, I’m only really intending to use it for Jellyfin and shared storage.

Do you have a spare PCIe slot in that system? Buy a used Intel Gigabit adapter for example.

Thank you so much for the help, I do have a free pcie slot… and apparently a lot of dusting to do, I was wondering if you had any other budget pcie network adapters, for instance would a tp-link (tx201) 2.5 gigabit work?

No, because that thing is also Realtek. It's Intel or Intel in the GbE space, I'm afraid.
