Boot After Removing Disk

Hello,

Possibly stupid question, but I've had my first drive failure and I have no spares. I was about to RMA the disk since it is under warranty, and I'm not sure if I can remove the disk and wait for the new one and still keep my pool operational. Is it possible to remove the disk and wait for the replacement with that slot missing, or do I need to order a spare drive to swap it out before I RMA the bad one? Thanks.

You'd need to tell us what your pool layout and redundancy is like. If you don't have mirrors or RAIDZ redundancy, you cannot remove any disks and retain your pool. The disk that you get back from RMA replacement will be a different disk and will not have your data on it.

Sure, it's not great, but not functionally different from waiting the same amount of time, if the drive is dead. If the drive is not fully dead, it's even less great to remove it, but the devil is in the details.

Today's forum award for unnecessary opaqueness: @Ericloewe.

Harsh, but fair. I did manage to write a paragraph completely devoid of meaningful statements.

Now I find something harsh to say about THAT. "You call that a paragraph? That's two vapid sentences connected by a dot and space. Seems to be a pattern with youse lately."
